In the Gardnerville Ranchos the first practical question on nearly every job is where the septic tank and the leach field are. The dominant repair pattern in the Ranchos is what fifty years does to under-built flatwork. A great deal of that original concrete went in at three and a half to four inches, without reinforcement, with joints cut too far apart or not at all, and without air entrainment, because the practice was different then and the lots were being developed on a budget. Fifty years of freeze-thaw cycling at 4,700 feet, plus deicer, plus vehicles that are much heavier than 1975 vehicles, adds up to slabs that are cracked into pieces, scaled at the surface, and settled at the approach. Those are replacements rather than repairs, and we say so rather than selling you a patch on a slab that will not hold it.
The climate work is the same discipline as the rest of the valley and it matters here because the driveways are long. Low humidity and afternoon wind mean a big flatwork pour has to be planned around evaporation: early start, sections sized so the crew is never fighting a surface that has gotten ahead of them, evaporation retarder, and curing that starts immediately. Air entrainment goes in every mix. And we are direct about the deicer rule — keep ice melt off new concrete through its first full winter and use sand instead, because more new slabs in this valley are damaged by a bag of ice melt in year one than by anything that happens on pour day.
